Reading

At Ss John Fisher and Thomas More RC High School, we firmly believe that reading is a fundamental building block for a child’s education. We recognise the importance of reading in developing strong literacy skills and a love for learning. That’s why we have made reading a priority at our school and use two platforms, Accelerated Reader and Bedrock Learning, to support our students’ reading progress. We understand that parents and carers play a vital role in supporting their child’s reading development. We encourage you to be involved in your child’s reading practices and to support positive reading habits at home. This can include setting aside dedicated reading time, providing access to a variety of books, and discussing the books your child is reading. We also encourage you to familiarise yourself with the Accelerated Reader and Bedrock Learning platforms, as they provide valuable tools and resources to support your child’s reading progress.

Morpheme of the Week

We are thrilled to announce a weekly literacy initiative designed supercharge our students’ vocabulary and expand their understanding of language: “Morpheme of the Week”! At Fisher More High School, we believe that empowering our students with strong language skills is a key foundation for success in their academic and professional journeys. That’s why we’re excited to bring you this innovative program designed to make language learning engaging and accessible.

What is “Morpheme of the Week”?

“Morpheme of the Week” offers a dynamic educational journey that will take our students on an exploration of the building blocks of language. Each week, we will present a fun and interactive video resource, complete with engaging animations. These videos will unravel the mysteries of word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, helping our students decode unfamiliar words with ease.

Why is this initiative important?

Understanding the structure of words is like having a secret key to unlock the richness of language. By exploring word roots, prefixes, and suffixes, our students will gain a deeper comprehension of how words are constructed. This knowledge will not only enhance their vocabulary but also boost their confidence in communication.

How will it work?

Every week, our students can look forward to a new “Morpheme of the Week” video, which will be accessible through our school website, on social media and via YouTube. These videos are designed to be engaging and entertaining, making the learning process both fun and educational. Students will participate in “Morpheme of the Week” on Mondays and Tuesdays of PD time, and can rewatch at their convenience. We encourage them to discuss what they have learned with their peers and teachers and use their new knowledge in their own academic writing.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of “Morpheme of the Week” are vast and far-reaching:

Expanded Vocabulary: our students will learn new words and understand their meanings, allowing them to express themselves more effectively in both spoken and written communication.

Improved Reading Comprehension: knowing word roots and their meanings will enable our students to grasp the context of texts more easily, enhancing their reading comprehension.

Enhanced Writing Skills: Aadeeper understanding of language structure will empower our students to write more creatively and persuasively.

Confidence in Communication: as students become familiar with word roots and their meanings, they will feel more confident in conversations and presentations.

We are excited to embark on this educational journey with our students and help them unlock the power of language. “Morpheme of the Week” is just one of the many ways we are committed to providing a top-notch education and empowering our students to succeed.
